Lisa’s Hip Replacement story with healthcare Abroad – in her own words.
I am 40 years of age, and before I got a hip replacement I could hardly walk. I work as a personal trainer, and I wouldn’t have been a good advertisement as a trainer that couldn’t walk!!!
I had hip dysplasia, but before I had an MRI and got the results, I had been to alot of physiotherapists for about 8 years and was told I had tight hips and glutes and just felt like I was fobbed of by them just because I was young and it wasn’t anything serious. In my heart I knew it was worse because it wasn’t normal not being able to move around and being in pain all the time.
On receiving my MRI results I contacted my local GP and he put me on a waiting list with Connolly Hospital 8 months ago. In that time, I started to deteriorate and I was in contact with my GP several times to get letters to try and get me up the list but there was no luck. I had been to the sports clinic to get cortisone injections but the consultant told me a hip replacement was the only solution as there was too much damage done. It was relief to know that, but I had no health insurance and I still had no appointment with Connolly Hospital.
My quality in life got worse and I got so down and agitated. I needed to get the surgery done. I found Healthcare Abroad online and rang Chris straight away. He was so helpful and understanding. Within 3 days I had a date for my surgery in Denia in Alicante. It seemed to good to be true and I questioned it all! It turned out my sister’s sister in-law knew Sorcha and I contacted her and she filled me in on everything. She gave me reassurance that and needed.
The surgery had to be paid up front and I didn’t have the money to get it done but with Healthcare Abroad you can apply for finance with the credit union and then the HSE will reimburse them within 16 weeks (Flights and hotel are not covered) .
Paul at Healthcare Abroad helped with the process and once I got the loan the whole journey was seamless, no problems at all.
From getting to Alicante airport with my Mam and the driver meeting us and taking us to the hotel there was no stress. The pre-op the following day took less than an hour and half and then surgery the following day. I was in hospital for 3 nights and then the following week I had 5 days of physio which gave me so much confidence in moving about. The physio team (Jenna, Mar, Vincent, Maria, Sergio) were amazing.
I cannot describe how well we were treated; it was second to none. The 2 weeks I was there with my Mam we made friends for life. We all went through the same journey and having the support and friendly faces made the journey so much easier.
The Healthcare Abroad Team could not do enough for us, all the drivers were amazing taking us to and from the hospital every day and anything we needed they got it for us.
A special thanks to Debbie dealing with my million questions!

Read Their StoryIf I’d listened to the doubts or kept waiting for the system at home, I’d still be limping around in pain. Now I’m looking forward to walking normally again, maybe even getting back into training.
