Erin from Cork – Knee Surgery with Healthcare Abroad

I got my ACL and PCL reconstructed, and part of my meniscus repaired. The original plan was just the ACL, but after further scans and during surgery, they found more damage. Thankfully, everything was done in the one go. I was told I’d have to wait 1–2 years for surgery in Ireland—even though I couldn’t walk properly. I contacted Healthcare Abroad and within two days, I had my surgery dates sorted. Three weeks later, I was in Spain for the operation.

Dr. Sendra and all of the Hospital Staff

I had my surgery with Dr. Sendra, who was excellent. He’s a lovely man and he put me at ease straight away. I came over on my own and was nervous about how I’d manage, but the staff and other Irish patients made a big difference. It felt like a small community, people looked out for each other.

The hospital was great. I stayed three days, got checked in on regularly, and the physio started right away. A week after surgery, I’d gone from barely bending my knee to hitting 90 degrees. That blew my mind, especially after how slow the recovery was when I injured it in Ireland years ago.

It’s a proper job done – no messing around

I was worried I’d lose my independence or need someone here constantly, but I didn’t. Everything from the airport pickup to post-op support was sorted. I even had craic with the drivers and staff. Everyone was sound.

I’m already thinking about going back playing hockey—without the constant fear my knee will go again. If you’re on a long wait and struggling, just pick up the phone.

“The physio is on another level - two sessions a day, and I’m collected and brought to and from the clinic. It’s intense, but every day I feel stronger. At home, I’d be struggling to even find a physio, let alone get there without being able to drive after surgery."

"Living in Howth, I couldn’t even walk down the hill because of my injury. Every step felt like my knee would give way, so I had to rely on lifts and shoulders to lean on. It was humiliating. I used to love going to Dublin football games, but the pain made walking and standing so awkward - it was embarrassing.

“Physio here was a game-changer. In Ireland, physio felt rushed and painful. But in Spain, it was more advanced and tailored. The approach was gentle and effective—no pain barriers, just steady progress. A week after surgery, I was walking without crutches, something I couldn’t even imagine after my previous operations.”
