Denis Deevy’s Shoulder Surgery Journey: “What a super service from start to finish”
For Denis Deevy, a truck driver from Donaghmede, the journey to shoulder surgery in Spain began in the most unexpected way — while changing his car. “The chap I deal with handed me a card for Healthcare Abroad,” Denis recalls. “I went home, rang the number, and that was just over three weeks ago. Now I’ve had the surgery and I’m already in physio.”
Denis travelled to Vithas Valencia Turia Hospital in Spain, where he was treated by Dr. Ferragut — “He was top,” Denis says. From the very start, everything moved quickly and smoothly. “It was pure fluke I found out about Healthcare Abroad. But the whole process just fell into place. Everyone was spot on. I’m still scratching my head wondering how it all happened so fast.”
A Comfortable Stay
He stayed at Hotel Primus, which he described as “lovely,” and was supported at every step. “Dave met me at Dublin Airport and made sure I had everything I needed. In Valencia, John was waiting for us. Everything was bang, bang, bang — no messing. It was exactly as it was explained.”
The care he received left a real impression. “Even the admin staff, the surgeon, and every single nurse — you were treated like royalty. The hospital was like a five-star hotel.”
Now in physiotherapy — which is reimbursed — Denis is starting to feel like himself again. “With the shoulder pain, there was only three-quarters of me working. The thought of being back at 100% — you can’t put a price on that.”
A truck driver by trade, Denis was starting to think he’d have to give up work. “Now I have the choice again. I have control of my life.”
He wants more people to know about it. “The credit union can fund the treatment. The information needs a rocket under it. Everyone should know this is an option.”
